Stonewashed Angels Silk Painting

     Stonewashed Angels  Dress MAKING record

Gallery of SILK PAINTING procedure:

  • Cutting motifs from old textile design tracings, then rearranging and taping behind silk frame into a new design. Hold screen up to sunlight or use a lightbox.  Its possible to work outside without a lightbox (as done here), propping frame up with sun directly behind, so images are clear.
  • Drawing out (tracing) designs with water soluble pen. The lines will wash out with steam fixing of silk.
  • Marking motif outlines with gutta resist application to prevent dye spreading into 'white motifs' when applied to background.
  • Painting of motif internal lines of definition on angels, leaves and flowers.  I do this freehand, but they could be traced if unfamiliar.
  • Taupe was used as the sole colour to match the taupe fabric coordinates.
